is very wide spread and with new GATT regulations being introduced,

Research and Development in Industry

| |
There are both private and government aided research
organization which employ bio technologists for
conducting appropriate research and development
studies for application in areas of concern such
as pollution control, waste management, and various
chemical processes, for increased productivity. |

Industrial Marketing : |
| |
Due to the nature of work, bio technologists are
often called in the consultancy of installation
of new industrial plants and checking out development
programmes. |

| Academic Courses |
| Candidates who have passed science
at the intermediate level with biology as the main subject
are eligible for admission in B. Tech. programme in biotechnology
as well as the integrated M. Tech. programme at IIT Delhi.
Secondly, graduates with sciences/engineering technology/medicine
are eligible for the postgraduate (M. Sc.) course in biotechnology.
Admission to the five-year integrated M. Tech. programme
offered by two IITs (Delhi and Kharagpur) is through a Joint
Entrance Examination (JEE), which is held for students who
have successfully completed the 10+2 or equivalent examination,
with physics, chemistry and mathematics and biology. For
B. Sc. in biotechnology, the candidate must have studied
science at the plus two level. The B. Sc. programme is for
a duration of three years and the B. Tech. course is for
a duration of four years. On the other hand, the integrated
MSc programme is for a period of five years. |

| Career Prospects |
| Biotechnology industry in
India is over a Rs. 1000 crore industry and will grow faster
in years to come. Export potential is also increasing which
is generating large amount of fund. |
| The jobs could range from
research and development to production and marketing. All
depends on the person's knack and his ability to work in the
right direction. |

| Remuneration |
| To start, the candidate can command
a salary of Rs. 8000 plus and other admissible perks. There
are plenty of overseas opportunities for Indian students
in countries like Canada, the US and other European countries.
The salary structure for Indian bio technologists in abroad
is quite high. |
| Biotechnology is rapidly
growing subject, with frequent advances being made through
research and development. In the face of increased industrialization,
India is a virgin field for biotechnological advancement,
and the second fastest growing employment sector after multi-media.
