| Publishing is gradually
becoming a big industry with thousand and thousands of new
titles coming in every year. Publishing means not just printing
books, it means packaging a book, pricing and marketing a
book in the right earnest. The job of a publisher is to get
hold of a manuscript, and turn in into a finished product.
Successful publishing therefore demands business acumen and
an interest in marketing. At present there are about 12,000
publishing houses in India. Of these, 2,400 bring out books
in Hindi, and 1,709 in English. There are various types of
publishing like textbooks, paperback, academic books, reference
books, children’s books, specialized journals, etc.

| Work Structure: |
| The work structure in a publishing house
is very well defined. There are many layers of work and each
department has some assignment to follow. The main functions
in a publishing house are editorial, production, marketing
and distribution. |

| Academic Courses: |
| There are a few universities, which
offer degree and post-graduate degree in publishing. The minimum
qualification to pursue a postgraduate degree is a good degree
from a recognized university. The minimum qualification for
a degree course is high school certificate with good results
and a special emphasis on English language. |

| Remuneration: |
| Publishing gives a very high standing
to a person in the society and he or she interacts with the
best of creative talents in the country. Salaries and grades
vary from one publishing house to another. |
