| General Physician: |
| Doctors possessing an
MBBS degree, with no particular specialization, can work
as General physicians. The work of a general physician would
be to make a general assessment of the disease and if beyond
control of him, should refer it to some specialised doctor.
But a MD degree in General medicine provides a specialised
training in a particular area of medicine. |

| Work Areas: |
| Nursing covers a range
of functions and responsibilities that vary with levels
of qualification and the working environment. The profession
is good for people who are compassionate and have a heart
for other's problems. There are few specialized areas where
nurses work, but in general they all look after the patient.

These nurses work in
hospitals, nursing homes and sanitariums. |

School Nurses: |
| |
These nurses supervise
student's clinics. They work in school health services
and regularly visit a number of schools. |

Industrial Nurses: |

Their job is to provide
preventive and other services under the direction
of an industrial Physician. |
|
Psychiatric Nurses: |
| |
They work with emotionally
disturbed and mentally handicapped patients. |
|
Midwives: |
| |
They look after mothers
and children , from early pregnancy until about
four weeks after the birth of the baby. |

| Academic Courses: |
| To become a qualified
nurse and to get a certificate as a certified nurse, it
is mandatory that the candidate must have a B.Sc. or M.Sc.
degree in nursing. The various levels of nursing are: Ward
Sister, Tutor, Senior Nursing Superintendent and Matron.

| To get a certified degree
in nursing, there are few institutions in India which offer,
diploma, graduate and postgraduate degree in nursing and
midwifery courses. |
| There are three kinds
of programmes from which prospective nurses may choose: |

B.Sc. Nursing: |
| |
10 + 2 with Biology, Physics
and Chemistry. The duration of the course is for three
years. After completion of the course, a candidate
can take up a job in a hospital or a nursing home.

General Nursing and Midwifery:

10+2 with Biology, Physics,
Chemistry. The duration of this course is also for
a period of three year. |
|
Health Workers (Female): |
| |
Class X Pass. This is usually
for a year and one can take up a job with some rural
or urban slum project. |

Private hospitals pay a little more. |
